Tankerton Views on 17 April 2011

Introduction

There has been a bit of discussion of Tankerton in the Simply Whitstable Visitors Book in recent days and, for the benefit of ex-pat Natives, I have included a small selection of scenes below - all taken on Sunday, 17 April 2011. They are not our best photos!!!! I had equipped myself to take shots off the coast but a sea mist put paid to that and pointed the camera at things inland... with the worng type of lens.

Photographs 1-3: Tankerton Circus

Above:  Tankerton Circus from the upper part of St Annes Road

Below: Tankerton Circus Close Up. A number of readers have mentioned the old Holmes Ice Cream Parlour of the mid-1950s. As far as I recall, this occupied the site to the left of the Wright Flooring shop and competed with Valente's for custom. The site is now occupied by Caroline Kitchens.

Below: Kingsdown Gardens. Wedged alongside the Circus (between St Annes Road and Kingsdown Park), I believe this was orginally donated to Tankerton by the Goldfinch family).

Photographs 4-6: Tankerton Slopes Looking East

Above: The flagstaff and cannons on the the apex of Tankerton Slopes.

Below: A view east looking towards Tanketon Bay Sailing Club and Swalecliffe

Below: A broader view of The Slopes  with Long Rock in the distance to the left

Photographs 7-8: Tankerton Slopes Looking West

Above: The Slopes looking west with Beacon House on the extreme left. If you are left wondering about that boat in the distance, see below!!!

Below: Yes.... it's the Whitstable-based trawler, "Danny Boy". At least I had the right lens to capture it!!

Photographs 9-10: The Castle - Selecting the 2011 Carnival Court

Above: We arrived at the Castle Grounds in time for an important ceremony - the selection of Miss Whitstable 2011 and her three Princesses.

Below: Entrants for the Miss Whitstable ceremony.

Photographs 9-10: The 2011 Carnival Court

Above & Below: The judges had their work cut out selecting from some excellent entrants. Eventually, they chose Elle Martin and she was supported by three worthy princesses. They will do us proud around the events of East Kent and I am sure everyone will join me in wishing them happy and successful year.

Photographs 11-13: Castle Scenes

Above: Following a recent £2m revamp, the Castle andOrangery Tea Room are becoming a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Even this early in springtime, it is well populated on a Sunday afternoon.

Below: Across the roadway, the ever-popular Tower Hill Tea Gardns was also packing in the punters.

Below: The Castle Gatehouse pctured from Tower Parade.

Photographs 14-15: Long Beach

Above and Below: The more "industrial" scenes of Long Beach pictured from Beach Walk
