Introduction
As most Whitstable people will know, the Castle building and
grounds have been undergoing a £2.5 million revamp. The photo sequence
below shows the project in its final stages of completion. As the
grounds remain closed to the public, the shots were taken from
Tower Hill and the Castle Bowling Green. Thanks go to the members
of Whitstable Bowls Club who kindly allowed me to take pictures.

Taken from the Castle Bowling Green,
the photo above gives an almost finished look to the
project. However, those green swathes were actually in the
process of being laid - see below. |

3-4: Work In Progress

|
Above: The area of ground
between the west terrace and the Tower Hill road still
needs some attention (se foreground) but things are most
definitely taking shape.
Below: The area between the
Castle's north face and Tower Hill is a temporary works depot |

this scene summarises overall progress on the western
side. |

6-7: West Side Features

| Above: The familiar statue has been returned
but, now, she is accompanied by a pergola.
Below: The ugly "flat roof"
extension of the 1960s has been demolished and replaced by
an elegant orangery with steps leading down from the
west terrace to the new lawns below. |
| Below: The west terrace (ie the raised ground
immediately in front of the building) is being paved thus
providing a link from the Castle and Orangery to those
impressive steps. |

|
Below: Work has been
necessary to the roof area.... including the creation of a
viewing platform. Some of the turrets are currently faced
with cement. I presume that some form of cladding will be
added. At the moment it looks as if someone has built
a sandcastle on top of it all. ;-) |

7-8: The East Side

|
Above: The old Rose
Garden has been extended and given a more open appearance,
Below: The old fountain
has been renovated and replaced as the centrepiece to this
area. |

7: More on the East Side

| Above & Below: Much of the old Rose
Garden was seeded some time ago and is now taking shape.
However, turf is now being laid on the remaining lawn
areas. |
