This unbelievable shot was taken at Beach Walk where the remains of old swing boats were still in evidence in 1963.

The eeriness of scenes such as this is beautifully summed up by Jackie in her email accompanying the photos...

"The thing that sticks in my mind is going over to Hampton Pier at Herne Bay and sensing absolute quiet - except for the sound of the ice floes creaking as they rubbed against each other. It was really eerie and I don't think I will ever forget it."

"I can also remember walking out on the ice floes off the beach near Jacques arcade. I managed to step between 2 floes and ended up to my knees in freezing cold water - ruining my smart leather boots. I would have been about 18 at the time!"
